Globe Salon Celebrates 12 Years Down the Rabbit Hole

I have to start this interview of Globe Salon president Staci Linklater with a few admissions in the interest of full disclosure. One: Staci and her partner James Reza have been dear friends of mine since 1994. Two: Down The Rabbit Hole, the Nov. 10 benefit party that Globe is throwing to celebrate 12 years in business, is partially sponsored by Wendoh Media, who publishes DTLV. And most importantly, I trust Linklater to cut my hair every three to five months or so. Should probably book with her soon.

That being said I could still appreciate Globe at a remove, because the nicest things I can say about them are pretty much all facts. The salon is critically acclaimed (Elle routinely includes it on its list of the top 100 salons in America), it has always been deeply involved with local charities and cultural entities, and its owners can throw one hell of a party when they put their minds to it.

Down The Rabbit Hole, a benefit for local arts nonprofit LV ARTreach, is a Globe party to its core. It’s happening in the studio of artist Tim Bavington (he of the Smith Center’s Fanfare for the Common Man sculpture), is catered by several of Linklater and Reza’s favorite restaurants (including Firefly and N9NE Steakhouse), and the evening will culminate in an Alice in Wonderland-inspired fashion show. Tickets are $100, and the proceeds are going to a local cultural non-profit, LV ARTreach.

In the midst of preparing for the event, Linklater took a moment to answer a few emailed questions about it.

Why celebrate the 12th anniversary? That’s kind of unusual.

We didn’t get to really celebrate our 10-year anniversary because we were focused on making it through the recession, so finally seeing light on the other side has given us a reason to celebrate. We’re also into our fifth year of being downtown, so that is a big deal.

Does this event feel like the closing of a chapter?

Twelve years is certainly a milestone, especially given the hard times following 2008. We had to take a step back and focus on our team and our guests, but we never stopped giving back. We hosted a very successful 2011 fundraiser for Three Square Food Bank to celebrate our third anniversary downtown.

This event marks the return of Fashion Fling, our large-scale fashion-focused fundraiser. Our goal is to make it an annual event, but we have to get through this one first.

You’re going with an Alice in Wonderland theme. Why?

The theme was inspired both the hidden downtown location of artist Tim Bavington’s studio, where the event will be held, and by Globe’s Samantha O’Brien, who is acting as creative director for the fashion show portion of the event. Tim’s studio seems literally “down the rabbit hole.”

I’m not familiar with LV ARTreach. Why did you choose them as the event’s benefiting charity?

LV ARTreach is a newer charity that a lot of people don’t know about. The program helps inner-city children through arts education. They’re under the umbrella of Casa De Luz, which is helping to make positive change in downtown’s Naked City—one of Las Vegas’ most challenged neighborhoods.

What are you most looking forward to, personally? The food? I hear Tim Bavington is making a custom shirt for the party.

The shirt, for sure. I’m thrilled that Tim has thrown himself into this. And the food? Well, thanks to some big-name sponsors who hold the same community values as Globe, it’ll be amazing. We’re not overselling the event; I want our guests to leave stuffed and smiling.
