It’s been six months since I last checked in on operatic singer Kristen Hertzenberg. Earlier this year, the former Phantom—The Las Vegas Spectacular lead was prepping for her Cabaret Jazz debut with her own band. It ended up being an intriguing, satisfying marriage made in blues, country, rock and even (gasp!) hip-hop heaven.
Now Hertzenberg takes another musical detour this weekend when she fronts gypsy-jazz combo Hot Club of Las Vegas at the third annual DjangoVegas!, a concert celebration of legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt. Hertzenberg is subbing for Hot Club singer Noybel Gorgoy, currently on tour in Europe. But the academically trained temp has let her hair down with Hot Club before. Her handful of gigs with them a few years ago marked the first time Hertzenberg stepped away from theater to sing with a real, guitar-centric band. Also on the bill: Amsterdam-based Robin Nolan Trio and L.A.’s Icy Hot Club. The music begins at 6 p.m. June 21 at the Historic Fifth Street School (401 S. Fourth St., artslasvegas.org).
