Celebrate Day of the Dead With Corner Gallery

day_of_the_dead_skull_WEBWith Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) only a few days away, it’s time to start thinking about body parts. Skulls, in particular. Skull decoration is a tradition of the Mexican holiday, which, contrary to its namesake, also celebrates life. Since most of us don’t exactly have human skulls lying (rolling?) around, Corner Gallery is selling hand-fired porcelain skulls for $20 in preparation for its fifth annual Day of the Dead celebration. Buyers are encouraged to purchase their skulls, decorate them and return them so they can be shelved and resold for a special “donation price.” Proceeds from sales of the embellished skulls go to inner-city youth art programs through Studio 8 Ten, Desert Sculptures and California-based dA Center for the Arts, a partner and art contributor of Corner Gallery.

As for decorating the skulls, pretty much anything goes. Corner Gallery’s Chris Frausto says she’s seen entire bodies attached to them!
