A mix of old and new Downtown dance parties ensures that when you don’t want to doll up and dole out big bucks to boogie on the Strip, there’s a dance floor waiting with no cover charge. Here’s a guide to seven nights of free dancing Downtown.
Monday: Vanguard Lounge
Don’t let the name fool you. Manic Mondays at Vanguard are not about the ‘80s. Resident DJ Xp3r3m3nt spins open format sets to get the crowd going. And starting the second week of April, once a month expect to hear funk and breakbeat as Vanguard caters to local dance crews.
Other nights at Vanguard: DJs perform nightly Monday through Saturday
Tuesday: Downtown Cocktail Room
Cymatic Sessions celebrates its third anniversary at the end of March, so you know this weekly affair is doing something right. Namely, it’s meeting the local demand for underground house music. It may not be mainstream, but that does not mean it’s any less danceable.
Other nights at Downtown Cocktail Room: DJs perform nightly Tuesday through Saturday
Wednesday: Gold Spike
After spinning over 100 nights in the Gold Spike’s Living Room, DJ Freddy B knows what buttons to push. The night typically starts with ‘90s hip-hop and ends with house and EDM. Freddy B describes the vibe as if “you broke into your friend’s parents’ house for a party.” Plus, every first and third Wednesday the Down & Derby roller skate dance party takes place in the Backyard.
Other nights at Gold Spike: DJs perform nightly Wednesday through Sunday
Even your friends who don’t dance will delight in watching throwback rap videos during Red’s Yo! MTV Raps Thursdays. This evening of old school hip-hop and R&B (think Run D.M.C., TLC, and Biggie) comes with a big, open dance floor.
Other nights at Red: Video dance parties Friday through Saturday
Friday: The Griffin
Don’t let the bar clientele up front fool you. For almost two years, DJ Mike Fish spins ‘80s, new wave and electro records in the backroom of The Griffin every Friday night. An added bonus is The Griffin’s selection of craft beer that makes for the perfect post-dance thirst-quencher.
Other nights at The Griffin: More DJs on Saturdays
Is that Phantogram you hear and see? Indie and electro music meets video every Saturday at Oddfellows video dance club. Throw on dirty jeans, shimmy to Sleigh Bells, and drink cheap cocktails to an eclectic mix of music at their New Noise party.
Other nights at Oddfellows: Video dance parties Tuesday through Saturday
Sunday: The Roof at Inspire
The only thing that beats dancing on the ceiling is dancing on The Roof. The newest Downtown dance affair, Elevate Sundays comes with a view that is enough reason to end your week here. The night is open format so expect to hear a little bit of everything.
Other nights at Inspire: DJs Friday through Sunday, Reggae dance party with live band and DJ on Thursdays
