One of the largest draws to Downtown Container Park is the craft cocktail bar Oak & Ivy, which has built a name for itself by having amassed one of the city’s largest (if not the largest at 104 labels) American whiskey collections. A new monthly event hosted by lead bartender Terry Clark offers another compelling reason to visit the tavern.
Each installation of Tasting On the Terrace spotlights a different spirit. The June 29 inaugural event featuring The Hilhaven Lodge and George Dickel sold out within days. The next event (now on Wednesdays) is slated for July 19 and features High West Whiskey. Beginning at 8 p.m., guests may head up to the shipping container bar’s rooftop and cool off with a cocktail (this month it’s a choice of an Old Fashioned made with High West Double Rye or a Smoky Mule made with High West Campfire) and enjoy bites from neighbor The Perch. At 9 p.m., a brand ambassador conducts a guided tasting of a flight of three expressions followed by a lively Q&A session.
“In the industry, we have [educational opportunities] presented to us constantly. These tastings we are doing are geared toward non-industry people, because there’s really nothing like this in town being offered to them,” Clark says. “I plan to keep hosting these for as long as people want to come.” Although the bar is known for its whiskey collection, the tastings are not be limited to that spirit, and Clark is open to requests.
Tastings are capped at 70 guests and tickets cost $45 each. Tickets can be purchased at Oak & Ivy or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
