Cockroach Theatre Kicks off 15th year with new Mural

Aerosol artists Apex and Vulcan team up for the vibrant piece

Cockroach Theatre Company would like to re-introduce itself.

Set to kick off its 15th season—its seventh at Downtown Las Vegas’ Art Square Theatre—the production company unveils a new mural on Thursday to mark the milestone.

The vibrant piece, which resembles a geometric peacock with rainbow feathers fanned out, features the work of famed aerosol artists Apex and Vulcan. If some elements look familiar, it’s because you might’ve seen their work in Las Vegas before. San Francisco-based Apex contributed to a mural alongside the Art Motel for the 2015 Life is Beautiful Music & Art Festival. Meanwhile, New York’s Vulcan has done work for the Downtown Project and serves as an artist in residence with Las Vegas-based graphics company Walls360.

The two artists have collaborated in the past, but this marks their first tag-team effort in 10 years and their first in Las Vegas.

Orchestrated by one of Cockroach Theatre’s board members, the mural came together quickly and easily, according to Vulcan. “They let us paint on the wall, so we painted and had some fun,” he says.

The two artists started early Monday and had clocked more than 20 hours on the wall by Tuesday afternoon, only taking breaks to escape the 100-plus degree heat.

The theatre company hopes the bold mural will attract more people to the neighborhood and, ultimately, raise awareness for their productions.

“It’s really about outreach,” says artistic director Daz Weller. “We’re doing a lot of exciting things with the theatre company.”

While the exact details of those upcoming events are under wraps until the 2018-19 season launch party Thursday evening at Artifice Bar, Weller shares that it will include five new plays, including two U.S. premieres and two opera productions. The company will also pay actors for the first time, a proud feat they’ve been working toward since Cockroach Theatre’s inception.

“It feels like a fresh start,” Weller says. “We’re ready to build on the success we’ve had in the last 15 years and move forward.”
